How do you want to split? You can also decide after the file is open.

Play the file and add a cut wherever you want one, on the waveform. Choose your file above to start.

How do I split an OGG file?

Open your OGG or Opus file on this page, mark where each part should start, and press Download. SplitMP3 copies the audio between your cuts into new files of the same format and saves them as one ZIP.

  1. Choose your OGG or Opus file. It opens in your browser and is not uploaded.
  2. Click the waveform to place cuts, paste timestamps, or pick equal parts or a fixed length.
  3. Check the list of parts, rename them if you like, then download them one by one or as a ZIP.

What kinds of OGG and Opus files can I split?

Ogg is a container. Inside it is either Vorbis audio (usually .ogg) or Opus audio (.opus or .ogg). You meet these files as voice messages exported from chat apps, game and meeting recordings, podcast masters and audio from open-source projects.

  • Opus is the newer codec and is common for speech. Its packets usually last 20 milliseconds, so cuts can be placed finely.
  • Vorbis packets vary in length, from a few to a few dozen milliseconds, depending on the encoder.
  • An .opus file stays .opus; everything else is saved as .ogg.

The limit is file size: 100 MB on desktop browsers and 50 MB on phones and tablets.

What happens to the sound and the tags?

Nothing is decoded or re-encoded. SplitMP3 copies the encoded packets between your cuts into a new Ogg file, so the sound is not recompressed.

  • Cuts snap to the nearest audio packet, about 20 milliseconds for Opus.
  • Tags and embedded cover art are not copied into the parts.
  • The waveform is drawn by your browser decoding a copy of the audio. If it cannot decode the file, the waveform is unavailable and you can still split by time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split a voice message from a chat app?

Usually yes. Voice messages exported from chat apps are normally Opus audio in an Ogg file, with the extension .opus or .ogg. Save the file to your device first, then choose it on this page.

What is the difference between OGG Vorbis and Opus?

Both are audio codecs that live in an Ogg file. Vorbis is the older one, made for music. Opus is newer, works well for speech and music at low bit rates, and uses fixed 20 millisecond packets. SplitMP3 splits both and keeps the codec of your file.

Will the parts be .ogg or .opus files?

They keep the type of your file: an .opus file gives .opus parts, and an .ogg file gives .ogg parts.

Why is there no waveform for my OGG file?

The waveform is drawn by your browser decoding a copy of the audio, and some browsers cannot decode Ogg. The splitting itself does not need it: choose Timestamps, Equal parts or Fixed duration and download as usual.

Can I cut an OGG recording into pieces of a fixed length?

Yes. Choose Fixed duration, enter a length such as 10 minutes, and every part except possibly the last has that length, to within one audio packet.
