Timestamps look like this
00:00 Introduction 03:25 Getting Started 12:40 Advanced Tips 26:15 Summary
Choose a file, then paste yours. Each line is where a part starts.
How to split an MP3 file
- Choose your MP3. It opens in your browser and is not uploaded.
- Paste one timestamp per line, with an optional title. Each line is where a part starts.
- Review the parts and their file names, then download them one by one or as a ZIP.
How timestamps are read
Each line is the start of a part. A part ends where the next one begins, and the last part runs to the end of the file. Use MM:SS or HH:MM:SS, with milliseconds if you need them (01:03:25.250). A separator such as a dash or a pipe between the time and the title is fine.

For a 30-minute file, that example produces four parts:
| # | Name | Start | End |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Introduction | 0:00 | 3:25 |
| 2 | Getting Started | 3:25 | 12:40 |
| 3 | Advanced Tips | 12:40 | 26:15 |
| 4 | Summary | 26:15 | 30:00 |
Rules that keep you from losing audio
- Timestamps must be in increasing order. SplitMP3 never reorders them silently; it shows the line number to fix.
- If your first timestamp is later than 0:00, an Introduction part from 0:00 is added and you are told so.
- A timestamp at or after the end of the audio is rejected, so no empty files are created.
- A line with only 00:00 is not a split; add at least one more timestamp.
Good to know
- Cuts snap to the nearest MP3 frame, about 26 milliseconds. Parts are copied, not re-encoded.
- The first fraction of a second after a cut can start with a few milliseconds of silence.
- Tags and cover art are not copied into the parts.
- Files up to 100 MB on desktop and 50 MB on phones. Only MP3 files are supported.
Frequently asked questions
What timestamp formats work?
MM:SS and HH:MM:SS, with optional milliseconds after a dot, for example 03:25, 01:03:25 or 01:03:25.250. Put the title after the time, separated by a space, dash or pipe.
Can I paste chapters from YouTube or podcast show notes?
Yes, as long as each line starts with a time. Lines that do not start with a timestamp are flagged with their line number so you can fix or remove them.
Are my MP3 files uploaded to a server?
No. SplitMP3 processes your audio in your browser. Your audio file is not uploaded to our servers.
Does splitting reduce audio quality?
SplitMP3 copies the existing MP3 data into new files without re-encoding it, so the sound itself is not recompressed. Cuts snap to the nearest MP3 frame, about 26 milliseconds, and the first fraction of a second after a cut can start with a few milliseconds of silence. Results can vary by source file.
Is there a file size limit?
Files up to 100 MB are supported on desktop browsers and up to 50 MB on phones and tablets. The exact limit that applies to your device is shown if a file is too large.
Other ways to split
- Split MP3 into equal parts when you do not have chapter times and just want pieces of the same length.
- Split MP3 by duration when every part should have the same fixed length, like 10 minutes.
- Add cuts by ear on the main MP3 splitter, where you can play the file and place cuts on the waveform.
