About SplitMP3

SplitMP3 is a free tool for cutting one long MP3 file into smaller MP3 files. You can place cuts yourself, paste chapter timestamps, divide the file into equal parts, or create a part every few minutes.

How it works

Everything happens in your browser. When you choose a file, your browser reads it from your device, finds where each MP3 frame starts, and copies the frames you asked for into new files. The audio is not uploaded to a server, and the parts you download are created on your device.

Parts are copied rather than re-encoded, so the sound is not recompressed. The trade-off is that cuts can only fall on MP3 frame boundaries, which are about 26 milliseconds apart, and the first fraction of a second after a cut can start with a few milliseconds of silence. SplitMP3 works with MP3 files only, and it does not separate vocals or instruments.

Who makes it

SplitMP3 is an independent project. There are no accounts and no payments. If you have a question, a bug report or a file that does not split correctly, write to hello@splitmp3.com. Please do not attach audio you do not want to share.
