How do I edit the tags of an MP3 file?

Open your MP3 on this page, change the fields you want, and press Download MP3. SplitMP3 writes the new tag at the start of a copy of the file and leaves the audio as it is.

  1. Choose your MP3. Its current tags are read in your browser and shown in the form.
  2. Change the title, artist, album, year, track, genre, comment or cover art. Leave a field empty to remove it.
  3. Press Download MP3. Your browser saves a copy with the new tags; the original file stays as it was.

What are ID3 tags, and which ones can I edit?

An ID3 tag is a block of text at the start of an MP3 file (ID3v2) that players, phones and car stereos read to show the title, the artist and the cover. These are the fields you can change here:

FieldID3 frameWhat it is for
TitleTIT2The name of the track.
ArtistTPE1The performer, shown in most players next to the title.
AlbumTALBThe album or podcast name.
Album artistTPE2Keeps the tracks of one album together when the artists differ.
ComposerTCOMShown by players that have a composer column.
YearTYER or TDRCTYER in an ID3v2.3 tag, TDRC in an ID3v2.4 tag.
Track and discTRCK and TPOSWrite 3 or 3/12 (track 3 of 12); the same for discs.
GenreTCONFree text, for example Podcast or Audiobook.
CommentCOMMA note in English; other comments in the file are kept.
Cover artAPICThe front cover, JPEG or PNG.

Which tag version is written?

A file that already has an ID3v2.4 tag keeps version 2.4. Every other file gets an ID3v2.3 tag, the version that Windows, macOS, phones and most players read. Text is stored as Unicode, so accents and non-Latin letters stay as you typed them. An old ID3v1 tag at the end of the file is replaced by the new tag so the two cannot disagree.

Fields this form does not show, such as lyrics and chapter markers, are read and written back unchanged. If you want to cut the file into parts first, use the MP3 splitter: tags are not copied into the parts, so edit each part here afterwards.

What happens to the audio?

Nothing is decoded or re-encoded. The tag is replaced and every byte after it is copied unchanged: in our tests the audio of the new file is identical to the original, byte for byte.

  • The file size changes by the difference between the old and the new tag, for example when you add a large cover image.
  • Your browser saves a copy under the same name, so it may add a number such as (1). The original file is not touched.
  • The whole file is read into memory while the tag is written, so the limit is 100 MB on desktop browsers and 50 MB on phones and tablets.
  • The file is read by your browser through the File API; SplitMP3 has no server that receives audio or tags.

Frequently asked questions

Is my MP3 uploaded when I edit its tags?

No. The file is read and the new tag is written inside your browser tab. Neither the audio nor the title, artist or cover you type is sent to a server.

Does editing the tags change the sound or the quality of the MP3?

No. Only the tag at the start of the file is replaced. The audio data after it is copied byte for byte, so there is no re-encoding and no change in quality.

Why does my player still show the old title or cover?

Many players and phones keep what they read from a file the first time. Add the new copy to your library as a new file, or remove the old one first. Some very old players read only the ID3v1 tag, which this editor does not write.

Can I add cover art to an MP3?

Yes. Choose a JPEG or PNG image of up to 5 MB; it is saved as the front cover. A square image of around 500 to 1,000 pixels shows well everywhere, and a smaller image keeps the file smaller.

Can I edit the tags of several MP3 files at once?

No. The editor works on one file at a time, which is also why it needs no installation: choose a file, change the fields, download the copy, then choose the next one.
